First ride on Kingston who has joined the team for a few months whilst Marianna Sawyer is away. This was his first competition this season and made a great start to finish second in the Novice.

Not to be out done Otto also finished 2nd in his Novice section so a good day had by all.  

It was lovely to be at Larkhill in good weather as usually it is wet, or foggy and or windy!! The ground was good too!!!

An amazing job was done to keep the show on the road and we were very pleased to get the Novice horses a run.

Tenz did a great test - 27.5 with just 1 pole but did jump very well with a great cross country to finish 7th.  This horse has come on so much during the winter despite having a growth spurt! Very much looking forward to him stepping up to Intermediate at Cirencester 2.

Otto's first competition of the season and the hills in Wiltshire have certainly benefited him.  He finished on his dressage score of 27 to take 2nd place. 

Sadly the weather beat the organisers so William and Conquer didn't get their Intermediate runs. 
They will run at Burnham Market next in the 3* and 4* respectively. 

Cirencester 1

It was good to get back out for the first day of the season for us.

Overall it was a good day.  The Partner (EHOS Syndicate) was on at 8.06 which meant leaving the yard at 2am! Talk about a rude awakening to Eventing 2023!

The Partner was so relaxed in his test and I was very pleased with him - as many will know this is not his favourite discipline but he was very rideable. He then had a great double clear going steadily XC to finish 7th. The clear SJ was particularly good as it was certainly causing problems with the tricky ground.

Ballycoog Breaker Boy was back having had a year off in 2022. He had an excellent test - very balanced and level headed and was up there with some very successful horses.  He found the SJ quite hard work due to his lanky legs and tricky ground so was pleased to come out with just a pole.  He was as straight as always XC and again we just went very steadily as planned.

had a very good test leading the section and achieved the only clear SJ. Unfortunately I had a rider fall in the early part of the course  - Both of us are absolutely fine and look forward to Cirencester next week.

Conquer is bred to show jump and we bought him as a 6 year old.  He likes his own space and given the choice wouldn’t have anyone in the next door stable. He is a sensitive character .  His confidence improved hugely over the years and this shows in his results and achievements.  

When away at big competitions we have to be one step ahead of him in how to keep him relaxed. He is a machine cross country. Where errors occurred they were not his doing.   He had a very good first half of 2022 finishing at Bramham 4*L with a good dressage, double clear with time faults keeping him out of the prizes.  We then gave him the rest of the year off as he had a small injury but he is back out in 2023 starting with a 7th in the Lincoln OI.

We had an exciting year developing him in 2022 having 2 good finishes at Cornbury 2*S - 2nd, Bicton 2*S 6th.

2023 looks like another exciting year building on 2022 with Bicton 2*L as the first goal for this year. 

We are looking forward to his journey together and stepping him up to Intermediate this year and will continue to develop his strength and ability.

Insight: 

William had 2022 out as he had a stable injury - however disappointing this was at the time, he has definitely physically benefited.  He is stronger than he has ever been and we feel our patience is paying off. 

Purchased as a 4 year old, he has been  very successful ever since.  During the winter following his 5 year old season, with time off, he grew a huge amount. This then followed a few months off as he pulled his hind muscles getting cast in the stable.  This lead to a late start to his 6 year old season which actually was a blessing in disguise, as it gave him a chance to adjust to his physical changes. As he is a tall horse we are taking time with him as he still has more strength to develop. Having been a quiet gentle giant as a 5 year old he turned into a demanding teenager as a 6 and 7 year old and is never happier than when he is working.  He really enjoys the challenges of Eventing and seems to like the big stage.

Lincoln Report

We have less than 2 weeks to kick off our 2023 season. 

We were very pleased with all the horses that competed in 2022 and look forward to them stepping up this year to their next levels.  

A couple of weeks ago we moved yards to Rockley Manor Stables, Near Marlborough.  There is unlimited hacking all across the Marlborough downs so this should benefit the horses fitness and mind. 

We are looking forward to a busy and exciting 2023 season. Will and The Partner (Conquer)are on the 4* Academy again this year. They had a very successful training weekend the other week. The Partner and Will are aiming for their first 5* together in Luhmuhlen. 

Ballycoog Breaker Boy is aiming for Bramham 4*L and then if that goes well 5* at Pau in October.  

Tenz (owned by Suzanne Houchin and Nigella Hall) will be at Bicton in May to do a 2* L and then stepping up to Intermediate and 3*.  Optimus Actinium will run along side Tenz . Mackenzie (owned by Caroline Leng) will start his BE career in April. Ronnie, who is a new purchase for Will to bring on and sell later in the year will start late spring. Ronnie is by the same sire as Ballycoog Breaker Boy so we look forward to his development.  Buzz (Owned by Claire Hubbard) is a five year old who will start competing later in the year. 

V.I.P Vinnie is back in full work which is lovely - we will enjoy each competition with him.  He starts at Burnham Market in April. 

We have 2 fab new Grooms  - Alissa Tyler - who as well as working at the yard will be out and about with Will at the competitions. Courtney Cook will be based at the yard and  holding the fort while we are competing. 

We look forward to an exciting year with the team. 





Looking forward to 2023.

It was great to be back at Oasby.  We haven't been for a few years but despite only having one horse to run there it was well worth the trip.  

Great ground and well run, as we remembered, and good opportunity to catch up with friends and sponsors. 

The Partner (Conquer) set the season off to a great start finishing 5th in his OI section with some stiff competition and Senior team horses.  31.6 and double clear with just a few time. 

We were really pleased with his dressage test, which he has always found challenging. The first time for a long time we didn't have to pump him with calmers to get through it.  He was the most relaxed he has ever been and we credit our new feeding regime with Hi Form Equine for this, together with his increased strength and trust in his own body. 

He is running at Cirencester Park on the 27th March and then heads to Burnham Market over Easter for the 4* Short.

V.I.P Vinnie is now retired from Eventing. He is going to be loaned out and have a career in Dressage.  We will be forever grateful for everything that was achieved with him and everything he taught us. 

Purchased as a 4 year old and was obviously talented from day one. He hasn’t disappointed since.  He loves to be the centre of attention and has always been top dog. 

He likes to perform on the big stages and they bring the best out in him. He now realises there are some young guns around and let's them know who's boss! 

His dressage has improved hugely over the years and we look forward to his future success.

Following XC retirement at his first 5* Vinnie will have 2022 on the side lines and we look forward to competing him in 2023.  We have no big plans for him and look to enjoy every competition we have with him.

3rd After Dressage at his first 5* at Bicton International. Sadly I had to pull him up after the second fence on the xc as I felt a change in his stride pattern. I am so glad I noticed as he injured a tendon. I don't like to imagine what would have happened had I not felt this. Nothing like the HIGHS and LOWS of the sport all in the space of 24 hours at the highest level.

Dom is Owned by Parkfield Breeding. He joined Will’s team in October 2019.  The first lockdown played into his hands giving Will the chance to train him into his system. He is an exciting addition to the team with great promise. We are very much enjoying his development.

Walpole Eventing Invitation 

With the last 2021 5* competition this weekend in France I reflect on my season which finished at Osberton - it was Fantastic to have 2 FOD's to finish the season with Ballycoog Breaker Boy and The Dominator gave me 110% all week at Osberton and worked with me every step of the way.  They were rewarded with a 4th (in the 3*L) and 2nd (in the 2*L) at Osberton.

A huge thank you to Michael Hewlett for looking after them so well and for doing all my trot ups for me. ( I was still recovering from my fall at Blenheim!) Also, for his care of the horses and the support through out the season. 

William started the week with a Thursday dressage which I was really chuffed with as he was relaxed and rideable and for me it was a better performance than at Blenheim. I was very disappointed with his mark as I didn't feel it reflected the work he did.  However, Dressage is very subjective so it obviously wasn't what the judges were looking for. 

William was lucky to have the best of the weather, as the forecast was very bad for the afternoon. They had reduced the course by 1 minute so they could get as many horses cross country before the weather came in.  He gave me a very good ride, very straight and honest, as usual. Although we did have one hairy moment when my air jacket went off as I leant too far back at a big drop and the new lanyard got over stretched!! This momentarily winded me but luckily the air pressure reduced over time. Clear Inside the time.

William never wants to touch the SJ fences although he is economical over them!!! He jumped better than at Blenheim and achieved the clear that I wanted which moved us from 11th to 4th. 

He has been very consistent this season - I am really pleased with him and looking forward to competing in the 4*L next season.  We are looking for owners to join us on this journey and be part of  the Will Rawlin Eventing Team. 

Dom - We knew he was capable of this result as he seems to have come on so much recently.  He very much did his best dressage performance, working with me from start to finish and trying really hard. 

I was slightly apprehensive about the cross country as he can loose confidence and shrink within himself. Despite the really bad weather conditions he was in his element and had his ears pricked from start to finish. I was so pleased with him when crossed the finish line  - clear inside the time.
After XC we were lying 4th.

No pressure then for the show jumping!!! This was by far his best round, feeling supple and rideable  and he felt really confident in himself.  A fantastic clear finishing with a well deserved 2nd place. It's great to be on the podium in such a competitive sport.  I'm super pleased for Parkfield Breeding as I know how much they put into this and all their horses. As a team we know this is the start of what he will achieve in the future. 

A big thank you to all the volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year - particularly all those who got soaked through in the down pour on Saturday afternoon at Osberton.

What a way to finish the season.....


Ballycoog Breaker Boy has achieved a top 10 finish in every age class.  My aim for the 8/9 year old Championships (4*S) was a top ten finish - great to achieve what we set out to do.

If I am honest I was slightly disappointed with the test and therefore the mark. He wasn't carrying himself as well as he has been and therefore his engagement from behind wasn't as good as it could be. He did everything I asked and it was a clear round test. 

I was glad not to be early in the Show Jumping as the fog was really bad and made the arena quite eerie - it was still there for us but the sun was just breaking through. Luck was on our side as we touched just about every fence but managed a clear. It was a full up twisty course with big crowds and he slightly distracted - I think these young horses have really missed the experience of having crowds over the last couple of years. 

Having had a fall on Saturday I wasn't in a great place both physically and mentally, the morning of cross country.  A mixture of Indiba's electromagnetic current treatment, both Saturday and Sunday, being strapped up and the belief that I was on a very good horse got me round the course.  The ground was the best there for years and an extremely good inviting course which was a real joy to ride with Ballycoog Breaker Boy being honest and straight from start to finish. We just had a few time penalties which left us in 8th place.

This horse just keeps giving and I would love to find people who would like to join in his journey to 5*. He has a lot more to come which is super exciting.

The Partner performed his best test to date at 4* (2nd best score) but he was the most rideable he has ever been in a big arena. I was thrilled with this as this part of eventing doesn't come naturally to him. Unfortunately I fell off him on the cross country (he didn't fall).  The Partner was absolutely mega around the course and giving me one of his best rounds cross country. He seemed to be coping with the crowds,  which were huge. This is very encouraging as he is a bit of a worrier.  The fall was a lot heavier than we thought and having checked my back out there are a couple of broken transverse processes (wings of the vertebrae). Nothing can be done about this so just sorting the bruising and pain.  The Partner came bouncing out on Sunday thinking he was getting ready for his show jumping and looked so well.

This Horse does it again......

Although my first 5* is what we have been working towards for many years the days leading up to it were business as usual with all the other horses competing at Broadway and Wellington.  They all had good steady runs ready for their 3 day campaigns.

Bicton certainly showed how an event should be run from all angles, and what a difference when everyone is pulling together.  Nothing was too much trouble. The horses, owners and riders were looked after with first class attention.  Nothing was left to chance and all the wonderful volunteers were only too happy to help.  A big thank you goes to Andrew Fell and his amazing team. Also, to Chedington Estate and Elite Eventing.tv. and all the sponsors.  A Final thanks must go to NFU who had an owners marquee on XC day.  Screens to enable them to watch all the action with complimentary drinks and food flowing all afternoon - this was greatly appreciated. 
 
Safe to say that the journey to my first 5* didn't go to plan. Having loaded up and ready to leave to have dressage lessons on the way, we noticed air coming from under the cab!  Not a good start - We quickly unloaded and put 2 horses on the small lorry to get to our dressage session to put final touches in place.  Mum stayed behind and got the mechanics out to sort the lorry and luckily this was ready to go on our return .

Having planned to leave at 8.15 we eventually left at 1.15!  

The horses travelled well. I took The Partner and Ballycoog Breaker with me to keep them in work, as they are both heading to Blenheim.

Thursday was trot up day and Vinnie just about held it together - I now know when he is about to misbehave so can prevent it from happening - such a spoil sport!!

Friday was dressage day.  With Vinnie having worked well on Thursday evening and feeling really good, I just gave him an easy leg stretch in the morning and kept him relaxed.  Our dressage wasn't until mid afternoon and both Vinnie and I were in a really good place.  

Vinnie pulled out his best test ever and what a day to do it!  Our first 5*! There were two big enough errors which prevented us from topping the leader board but to be sitting in 3rd behind Pippa and Piggy was quite something!

My main aim was to go to Bicton under the radar and enjoy every minute.  However, with the Horse and Hound editorial and the Eventing Podcast series that wasn't going to happen!!  Having said that , I did actually thoroughly enjoy all the various media chats and podcasts. I look forward to doing more of this in the future.  

Sadly, cross country day was very short lived as we had to retire after fence 2.  I had felt a change in Vinnie's gait and knew that not all was well.  It has been confirmed now we are home that he has injured a tendon and will be off for next season.

As gutting as it is our aim is to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery so that he will be back competing in 2023.  

He is very happy and content and looking every
bit a 5* Horse.

We are now focussing on Blenheim where The Partner and Ballycoog Breaker Boy are both competing and this is followed by Osberton.

The long trip to Somerford Park was well worth it with great results  -  a 1st, 2  x  2nd's and a 7th. We left the yard at 3am with 4 horses and left the yard at 11.15pm having unpacked and put the horses to bed.

V.I.P Vinnie (2nd), The Partner (7th) and Ballycoog Breaker Boy (2nd) were all in the OI.  All in different sections.  All three  produced very good tests followed by double clears.  I ran competitively as the ground was the best of the season. I particularly wanted to test what I had with V.I.P Vinnie before we head to Bicton 5* in a couple of weeks.  This was because we have had a frustrating  season on the cross country, we have done a lot of work over the last 2 months to address this both in training and bit changes.

The Dominator had much to live up to in his ON class and produced his best test yet scoring 20.
This put us in the lead but we rolled the last pole in the SJ which dropped us to 2nd.  We ran clear XC and 1 second inside the time to take the win.  He was king  in the lorry on the way home much to the annoyance of the other horses, all who had put in stella performances.

This has set them all up for their Autumn campaigns.  

A big thank you to Somerford Park for putting on a fabulous event, as always.  The new show jumping arena rode well and the twisty course challenged us all.

It is exciting to be supported by Equitex UK and for them to be part of our team. The Saddle pads are made to a very high standard and very definitely improve the comfort of the horses.  I love the fact that they don't slip  - this is very important for me as the horses have to work in 3 different disciplines. They help to protect the horses backs from pressure points and adapt to the way the horses move and muscles develop.
